We start from Platanias and we head at Lafkos .

The village was built between the 15th and 16th century by Captain Stergios Basdekis . It saw moments of great economic boom during the Turkish occupation and its tradition in the arts and letters is great.

We park in the big parking lot next to the gas station and from the steep road there we are heading towards the village square. It is one of the most beautiful squares of Pelion villages with shady trees and cool waters . Just beside the church is the Fampeio museum.

The Fampeio Museum is housed in the old Primary School Lafkos Magnesia, in the southern part of Pelion, 50 km.away from the city of Volos. Established in 2005 in honor of the artist Thanasis Fabas (1922-2011). In his paintings, which are influenced by the archaic simplicity and Byzantine iconography, the female figure dominates. He has edited the book covers of writers C. Ritsos, M. Lountemis, H. Lefousis and those of I. Tsatsos(all of them glorious neoclassical greek authors) and covers classical music records. In the halls of the Museum are exhibited paintings (60 in number) and 8 statues (of white Pelion marble) which are donated by the artist himself.

Then we can visit the one of a kind Antonis Tavanis Museum of Radio.Close to 120 antique radios, dating from 1920 to 1960 are hosted there.

The radios were donated by German professor of Engineering,Vilfrent Scheps –who now participates in the CERN experiment- , a large philhellene that fell in love with Pelion 13 years ago, and while in the beginning the museum was housed in the neoclassical older two-storey house of artist Magda Karastathis,it is now housed in the building of the agricultural cooperative in Lafkos, which is at the entrance of the village.Further information about the two museums you can seek and obtain in our hotel.

In the village square there is the church of Panagia, dedicated to Virgin Mary . It has an interesting bell tower and has the shape of a basilica trichorn temple. In honor of it,there is a festival in the village which is held on 8-10 September as well as on the eve and the day of Agia Paraskevi on 25 and 26 July .

Then , we suggest you take time to go to the Monastery of St. Athanasius , located north of the village at " Kotikia " , an area with rich flora. It was built in 1795, where the old monastery of the Archangels of Agios Georgios Nilias stood once, at the expense of Stergios Basdekis. Built by the famed regional architect Dimos Zipaniotis,it is now characterized as a precious Christian Orthodox monument and a testament to the region’s culture.

Remarkable are also is the stone reliefs by sculptor Miliou, adorning the exterior, as well as the early Christian temple remains. The monastery of Agios Athanasios holds a celebration on the eve of May 1 and May 2 the day,and there is a traditional Greek feast held just beyond the monastery around the site of an old threshing floor. This feast is transferred accordingly if those calendar days coincide with the days of Lent or Easter.

Of course, for your visit in Lafkos to become truly memorable , make sure to hang around the beautiful neighborhoods , walk through the picturesque streets of the village, admire the beautiful mansions with the neoclassical influences and relax in the spacious paved square . Here you will have the opportunity to enjoy the shade of tall plane trees , and a rest for lunch at one of the taverns and restaurants there is a definite must!
